Room number: 1
The studio is open Saturday 18 April from 12-17

Multimedia artist Tone Bjordam explores the dynamic relationship between art and science. She engages with processes of transformation in nature, with a particular focus on ecology and climate, in collaboration with leading scientists. Her work is based on a search for meditative and reflective states – such as those that often arise when encountering clouds, light phenomena, rock formations, the sea, or details in the forest. For more than two decades, she has developed a distinctive technique based on filming and photographing liquid pigments in water and crystallization processes under microscope. The resulting works are abstract landscape paintings in motion, unfolding gradually in cascades of colour and evolving forms.

Video, performance, painting, drawing, sculpture installation

Still image from video, ink and pigments in water
"Sea Allegory", Tone Bjordam, 4K video, 6 min, 2024 Exhibited at Bomuldsfabriken Kunsthall, Deichman Bjørvika, Glasslåven in Norway and Alma Löv Museum of Unexpected Art in Sweden Purchased as a public installation for the reception of the head office at GARD in Copenhagen, Denmark
A still from the video project "Synch", where Tone Bjordam has filmed dancer and choreographer Anna Asplind in the forest. Asplind reflects movements and shapes in the landscape, and in the dark of the evening Bjordam projects this video material onto the forest and onto Asplind. In this way, the person in the video image becomes an integrated part of the surrounding landscape.
"Synch", video: Tone Bjordam, dance: Anna Asplind, length 5 min, 2024 Exhibited at Bomuldsfabriken Kunsthall in 2024 and will be shown at Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium in the summer of 2026
Still image from a video showing Tone Bjordam and Marten Scheffer during the performance "Trajectories" in the concert hall at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark
"Trajectories", a video performance by Tone Bjordam, with music by scientist Marten Scheffer, 2023 It was the opening act of the art and science conference 'Imagine Earth', June 8 2023 at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark Trajectories is inspired by the scientific article "Trajectories of the Earth System in the Anthropocene" (Will Steffen et al.) The project premiered in 2019 as the opening act of the international climate conference ECCA (European Climate Change Adaption) at CCB (Centro Cultural de Belém) in Lisbon, Portugal
Paintings on windows that change in the light, during the day, and with the seasons. They are partially transparent, so that the landscape, people, animals and plants outside are visible through the motifs.
"Deeptime", Tone Bjordam, paintings on glass, from the solo exhibition "Deeptime" at Glasslåven, Hadeland, summer 2025 From a series of site-specific works painted with watercolors directly on to the windows in the exhibition space, inspired by the geological history of the landscape outside. You look out of the windows, but also out at geological eras, flora and fauna, that unfold in the paintings.

In my studio

My studio is on a hill in the forest, in Nordmarka, on the 2nd floor of an old timber building. Visitors walk through the forest from Sørkedalen (4 km) or from Frognerseteren (7 km) to get here. The studio is full of rocks and minerals, plant materials, microscopes and art. Tea and coffee will be served. I will do a video performance at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 18th.

Planned projects and exhibitions

“For bare trær” the summer exhibition at Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium, May 2 – September 20, 2026. Curated by Bjørn Hatterud and Per Gunnar Eeg-Tverbakk. I will show a video I made in collaboration with dancer Anna Asplind.

“Drift” is a commissioned work I am making on behalf of Nordland County Council, for a symposium that will be organised over several years, starting June 6, 2026.
