In my sculpture-based practice, I am currently working with textile projects that emerge from an expanded understanding of painting. I sew and upholster canvas so that the stitches form soft reliefs or tapestries in abstract, concrete, and decorative motifs, before painting them with acrylics. The motifs visualize themes such as vulnerability, transformation, and suffering, but also home, belonging, and euphoria. The objects are then incorporated into installations, forming their own symbol-laden universes that reflect on the life-sustaining significance of care.

Daniel Peder Askeland and I have recently established ourselves as the duo “Aske og Fuica,” a collaboration grounded in a shared commitment to the ancient and oceanic medium of painting. For twenty years, we have each explored pigment, surface, light, and the history of painting in order to reproduce both the fleeting and the moving, as well as that which carries weight and substance. The duo functions as a painterly circuit, where dialogue and mutual support create a space for developing risk-filled ideas and carrying them forward, together and individually.

Painting, sculpture, installation, sound, photography, textile, ceramics and social projects

For the group exhibition Virksomheten, curated by PYTON at Kunstnerforbundet in 2023, I was invited to participate with a functional work.

Shaping Forces is a freestanding textile sculpture conceived as a room divider, measuring 180 cm in height and just over two meters in width. The work consists of soft, symbol-laden reliefs made from sewn and padded canvas, painted in yellow tones on one side and in various shades of purple on the other. A central figurative motif depicts simplified human figures holding a rectangular element—does it represent a document, a flag, or a script? Several rectangular forms appear to move through currents of air, interwoven with a bird in full flight, a snail balancing on the stem of a flower, and a fetus-like motif.

In my studio

Visual artist, painter, and duo partner Daniel Peder Askeland is a guest at the studio. He will present works and a digital portfolio. You can view his profile on Oslo Open.

I am developing a new project based on biographies shaped by the fascist coup in Chile in 1973 and the subsequent dictatorship. The project consists of four textile installations for temporary outdoor presentations, in which the landscapes they inhabit are given an active and symbolic role. The title of one of the installations is:

Coffins on the Moon
